FURY UNLEASHED

Posted on February 12, 2008

DevilDriver’s upcoming release The Fury Of Our Maker’s Hand (coming this summer) is complete. Dez received the final master of the album yesterday, and tells that his living room became a pit last night with family, friends, and the band all listening to the new tunes. What else to report from the world of DevilDriver? Dez relays: “We’ve been rehearsing for our upcoming Machine Head/The Haunted/It Dies Today shows. The rehearsals have been going amazing, the band is a machine right now. We’ll be main support, and that gives us an opportunity to play 10/11 songs as opposed to the usual 7/8. We have a few surprises for the hardcore DevilDriver fans out there – we’ll be playing a few songs off of the debut that we have never played live before (not gonna tell ya which ones). As well, a cover will be thrown into the mix…again, not gonna tell ya which one, just come out to see. We’ll also be playing 2 new songs off the upcoming The Fury Of Our Maker’s Hand, so get ready for that. “After the MH run, we’ll see you out this summer on The Sounds Of The Underground tour, featuring Clutch, Chimaira, Opeth, and a host of other great bands. We’ll be going on between noon and 3:00 each day, so get there early if you wanna play with the devil. “We received the final master of the album yesterday, and my living room became a pit last night filled with family, friends, and the band all listening. Gotta say, Colin Richardson, thank you. This sound created will set us apart and elevate us to where we wanna be. “Looking forward to healthy dose of touring.” DevilDriver The Fury Of Our Maker’s Hand coming this summer…CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE ALBUM ARTWORK

ROADRUNNER TAKES THE BIZKIT…

Posted on February 12, 2008

Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst has been confirmed as the fourth í¢ä‰åñteam captainí¢ä‰åŒ for Roadrunner’s 25th Anniversary í¢ä‰åñAll Starsí¢ä‰åŒ project. He joins Joey Jordison (Slipknot), Dino Cazares (ex-Fear Factory/Brujeria) and Robert Flynn (Machine Head), who will each assemble a unique team of artists to appear on each brand new track track that they have written for the project. In order to cover as wide a spectrum as possible, no musician will play for more than one writer/producer and each song will feature a different vocalist. Although the original intention was for all 4 í¢ä‰åñcaptainsí¢ä‰åŒ to be Roadrunner artists, Durst contacted the label about becoming involved when news leaked of the project on the net a few weeks ago. His passion for the Roadrunner dates back as far as Canadian thrash metallers Annihilator in the late ’80’s, culminating on his appearance on the eponymous Soulfly album in 1998 (Limp Bizkit also supported Soulfly in Europe the same year). Currently, Durst has expressed a lot of interest in Trivium, who hail from his home state of Florida, although he is still to confirm any of his participating musicians. ROADRUNNER ALL-STARS album is due for release later this year.

CALIBAN IMPOSSIBLE

Posted on February 12, 2008

Check out this Interview from Calibans recent tour with Hatebreed. The Interview was conducted by ROOM 13 ———- Formed in 1997 but already revered in the European metal-core scene, Caliban display the keen sense of musical understanding that wouldn’t necessarily be associated with heavy music. Employing melody to their fast paced metal, Caliban provide a diverse audience with an equally diverse type of music. Philippa McMahon chats backstage to Marc (guitars) before their support slot for Hatebreed and Crowbar. R13: How are you today? You alright? C: I’m alright, how about you? R13: Fantastic, thanks! R13: What did you get up to yesterday then? C: Yesterday we had a day off, which was nice. R13: Are you looking forward to making up for your disastrous performance at the Metal Hammer awards? C: Yeah, but it was more the venue’s fault, rather than our own. The power to the stage turned off. All our stuff was fine, but the amps didn’t work. When we asked the manager “can you put the power back on?” he said “I don’t know how!” It took them so long to figure it out that our set was over. R13: Disappointing for you… C: Yeah, especially because we came for just that show. R13: What do you prefer doing- one off shows or tours? C: It depends on how far away the country is. Usually we try and get tours but we don’t mind travelling around Germany or going to London or Belgium for just one show. R13: You’ve played with some big names… How does it feel to share a stage with bands you love? C: Very nice! It’s amazing to play with our heroes from when we were young. We used to listen to Pantera a lot so it was amazing to have played a show with them. R13: So…what about your history? When did you begin to be Caliban and not just some local band? C: Around ’98…probably a little earlier- like school bands and stuff. We’ve had three permanent members for around three…maybe five years. No drastic lineup changes though! I think our lineup is settled now. R13: How do you go about recording a song then? C: Umm… I write the song on guitar and Andy will write the lyrics. We’ll put them together at rehearsals. Our band works better that way because sometimes you can have too many ideas. If too many people want to bring something together it gets confusing. R13: Have there been any incidents where another band member has had an idea and it’s worked better than something you or Andy could have come up with? C: It happens all the time as we work the songs out together. R13: What do you try and achieve on stage? C: We have no goal on stage other than putting on a good show. We just try and play as well as we can. We always do the wall of death. We get the fans to split up and then run at each other during one song. Some people think we’re trying to copy other bands by doing that even though we were doing it at our shows earlier. R13: So we can’t expect any rock ‘n’ roll antics on stage then? No throwing instruments or band members into the crowd? C: No, not often. Sometimes I’ll put my guitar away and I’ll jump into the crowd. R13: What goes through your mind when you’re doing that? C: I dunno… nothing really. I’m just having fun I guess. R13: …and when you’re not playing? What music do you chill out to? C: On tour…I don’t listen to much music on tour because I’m surrounded by music every day, all night… When I’m not playing the other bands we’re touring with are… But in general I listen to a variety… Hardcore, Swedish metal…anything really. I love melodic as well as heavy stuff and that’s shown in our music. In the last year we’ve found we’ve got a lot of younger fans. R13: Is that from the coverage you’ve had on TV channels such as Scuzz? I know I’ve seen the video several times and I don’t even have Sky TV! C: Hehehe, yeah. A producer normally thinks up our videos. We send them the lyrics and the song and they send us back their ideas. As a band we pick the idea we like the most. I don’t really think about that though, I’m more interested in what our songs sound like rather than what they look like. For our last video we didn’t have any particular ideas for it. I’m not that interested in it really… R13: You were included on the OST for Saw. What did you think of the film? C: Oh, it was alright. I like horror films… and comedy… I don’t like action films. I think the only soundtrack we’ve been used on is the Saw OST though. R13: I can’t stand Mission Impossible, I think it’s a terrible film! C: It’s…not that great! R13: What festivals are you going to be playing this year? C: We’re playing Donnington- The Download festival- we’ve already confirmed. We’re also playing the big fests in Germany as well like Rock Am Ring. R13: What bands are you likened to in reviews? C: The name Killswitch Engage always pops up… R13: Are you happy with that comparison? C: I really like them, but we’re not the same as them and people need to understand that. There are similarities, but there are also a lot of differences. ———- CALIBAN – THE OPPOSITE FROM WITHIN – OUT NOW

SAFETY HELMETS AT THE READY!

Posted on February 12, 2008

Hot on the heels of their valentines run of dates, the relentless & formidable BLEEDING THROUGH are heading back for another bite of the UK. The O.C. faves have been hard at work on their new album, set for release on Trustkill/Roadrunner in September, so expect to hear some new tunes being showcased! Look for kids swinging from the ceiling at the following: 26 June – London Underworld 27 June – Nottingham Rock City 28 June – Glasgow King Tuts 29 June – Manchester Jilly’s Rockworld 30 June – Newport TJs Returning with them will be the aggressive battery that is ZAO. Treating the UK to a mere 2 shows last year, Zao return in support of the apocalyptic Ferret/Roadrunner album ‘The Funeral Of God’. Zao combine elements of Bay Area thrash metal, precision tuned Carcass-like speed metal and the hard-fought credibility of hardcore with a dark vision that recalls Nick Cave, Danzig or Johnny Cash, and the (perhaps even dubious) lilt of British pop music and the more avante-garde outer reaches of rock n’ roll. Bring earplugs, and a safety helmet.

A FEMALE LIFE IN A ROCK KEY

Posted on February 12, 2008

We would like to thank SashaS at DEO2 for this interview with Bleeding Through’s Marta A female life in a rock key Bleeding Through’s Marta: mini-portrait of a keyboardess Bleeding Through’s album ‘This is Love, This is Murderous’ recently had a Euro re-release with extras – three live tracks and two video-clips. Of the bonus material, ‘Rise’ may present the band best because it is fast, furious, intricate, loud, complex, huge, overwhelmingí¢ä‰åŒ_ Not that the rest of the tracks are less punchy and deliver sonic KO’s time after time. The Orange County outfit’s twin guitars attack, courtesy of Brian Leppke and Scott Danough, propelled by lightening drum-work of Derek Youngsma and spine-tingling bass of Ryan Wombacher, enriched with atmo-keyboarding by Marta and topped by the deeply doomsdayish intonation of singer Brandan Schieppati, is a musical offering practically capable of depilation. The band will also have a track on the soundtrack to ‘The Cave’, alongside Killswitch Engage, Open Hand, Lacuna Coil and It Dies Today. [The film is due to open mid-August in the USA.] The dark, willow figure of Marta is full of joie-de-vivre and she talks openly, eagerly but thoughtfully. We start with a confession and, as it turns out, we end up with another one. í¢ä‰åñI didn’t write the last album although a lot of people may not know thisí¢ä‰åŒ_ I didn’t do any writing, or recording, but I’m on the picture. What happened is that I didn’t join the bandí¢ä‰åŒ_ The keyboardess before me had been talking about leaving for a long time but was persuaded to stay until the album was finished.í¢ä‰åŒ í¢ä‰åñThat was her final part in the band and I came along just after finishing recordings. I’m in the pictures but I’m playing somebody else’s pieces. Live, I’ve added some parts, filled in few gaps, there is a bit more of me in it although I didn’t change anything basically.í¢ä‰åŒ Pre-devinyl state Settle-born Marta would be in college, if she hadn’t join the band, studying ballet and psychology great groundwork for the Metal world she swapped her one-plus years of studies for. Having tried her luck with a few bands but of jazz and Dixieland orientation [her CV is getting heavier and heavier – Ed Chief], she finds herself a professional musician at the age of 20. Entertaining the worldí¢ä‰åŒ_ í¢ä‰åñI conducted a choir whilst I was at school, played organ in a church, taught piano lessons, I did everything but being in a band. It’s not like I didn’t want to be in a band and have always listened to a lot of music, but I was doing a lot of other things just to kill time.í¢ä‰åŒ í¢ä‰åñI was a big fan of Bleeding Through before I joined and what attracted me to them was the way they used to add keyboards to the much heavier stuff. But, the band that changed me, inspired me and really opened my eyes is AFI. They push into new direction every day and I’d like us to do that as a band. I love that band and they are our friends.í¢ä‰åŒ It must be ego-boosting to be a rock-chic does it get unbearable at times? í¢ä‰åñIt’s not that bad and I’ve always been around boys but I think it was a bit strange at the beginning when I was pretty much the only girl on the tour. There would occasionally be a girl-roadie but I’ve never tried to make an issue about it. I think it really matters, maybe to the fans but it is not admiration I’m after, based on my gender.í¢ä‰åŒ How often do boys – or girls for that matter, we don’t like to discriminate – try to chat you up? í¢ä‰åñNot that often because I think most are intimidated by me being in a band but there are passesí¢ä‰åŒ_ From the boys, mainly, and I wouldn’t mind if there were more! But then, I was in a relationship for a long time, as well.í¢ä‰åŒ The mass lust Bleeding Through’s imagery is loaded with tales of betrayal, resistance, rejection, absolution, deception, redemption and sensuality. There are many elements on their menu, be it straight or hardcore Metal, punk or Goth, thrash or fusionismí¢ä‰åŒ_ ‘This Is Love’ has consolidated the band’s sound that was hinted on the ‘Portrait Of The Goddess’, in 2002. [The band’s debut ‘Dust To Ashes’ appeared in 2001.] Six individuals, three sharing a house, one goal still, a night can be a forlorn place. Fame may be even a lonelier business for a woman because men appear not very good at waiting in the wings? í¢ä‰åñYeah, I think you are right about men being bad at waiting and there are a lot of men on tour who have girlfriends at home and there is no problem. There is also that idea of people lusting after a woman, a few or a hundred, that brings instability to a relationship. I just broke up with a boy, last week, after few years together.í¢ä‰åŒ How much does such heartbreak influence playing? í¢ä‰åñSuch events affect playing greatly and this time I’m playing with more sadness it can turn into angry playing and I’d be more aggressiveí¢ä‰åŒ_ I hope it will peter out and not inform my writing and playing on the new album. I share house with my singer and bassist, so we can work on our music whenever we want to. But, due to touring we’ve not been able to do much. We’ve done some writing, we’ve got five new songs that are ready for the new album.í¢ä‰åŒ When can we expect it to be released? í¢ä‰åñAs soon as we are back from Europe, we’ll have a month of songwriting and then go into the studio and have the new album ready for September, the same time we issued the current album.í¢ä‰åŒ Bleeding Through’s live work suggest they have potential to move the parameters of heavy music in yet another invigorating/interesting/intriguing annexe to the Metal Parthenon.
