Black Eyed Jericho

Posted on February 12, 2008

Hardcore troopers WALLS OF JERICHO have preserved the brutality of their live show for future generations of moshing masses in their new video for “There’s No I In Fuck You!” The video was directed by Kevin Leonard who also shot videos for TERROR, HIMSA and NEVERMORE. The video visualizes the idolatry of rock stars and goes on to refute this idea of glamour and stardom. “It’s not about being rock stars it’s about being real people,” said lead singer Candace Kusculain. The video’s narrative is also interspersed with footage of the band’s live show at Chain Reaction in Anaheim. Normally, Monday nights are a bare-bones scene for concerts, but on the night of this show, WALLS OF JERICHO managed to pack the house to capacity, selling 500 tickets pre-sale for the 275-person venue and selling several thousand dollars worth of merchandise that night. Despite the fact that the band had to play “There’s No I in Fuck You!” three times in the set for different shots in the video, the crowd was just as excited for the second and third renditions as they were for the first. “The show was awesome. The kids were crazy,” says Kusculain. “One kid grabbed me and gave me a kiss on the cheek.” Unfortunately, kisses weren?t the only thing being distributed that night. During one song, an overzealous mosher took to the stage for a dive and somehow got his leg tangled in lead singer Candace Kusculain’s mic wire. Unfortunately, the wire was also wrapped around Candace’s wrist, resulting in a blow to her head. Luckily, Candace is no stranger to this kind of “on-the-job” injury. Having already sustained black eyes and a broken nose in previous shows, the most tenacious lead singer in all of hardcore, male or female, merely shrugged off the injury and soldiered on for the kids like she always does. “I didn’t even realize there was blood on my head. I didn’t even realize it was mine. It happens all the time. I’m sure people in the crowd got hit way harder than me.” And in true hardcore style, Kusculain continues good-naturedly, “I got a black eye last night. I woke up this morning, got a little shiner. I swear I’m gonna get something broken during this tour.” The frenzy of the live show only follows from where the music leads. Candace, along with guitarists Mike Hasty and Chris Rawson, bassist Aaron Ruby and drummer Alexei Rodriguez set the tone for a relentlessly chaotic show with their speedy metal guitars and crushingly dense breakdowns. In the past, WALLS OF JERICHO have played with the likes of GOD FORBID, FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES, MARTYR AD, 36 CRAZYFISTS, TERROR, THROWDOWN and MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD. More recently, the band has joined forces with BLEEDING THROUGH and IT DIES TODAY for a cross-country tour and will embark on a European tour with UNEARTH and SICK OF IT ALL in November. blabbermouth.net

Interview with Hatebreed (pt 2)

Posted on February 12, 2008

Before the Unholy Alliance tour kicked off, we offered our street team, the chance to interview Hatebreed. The teamer who sent in the best questions, would be able to ask the band their questions, and have the answers posted here. The winner was chosen, and here is PART TWO of his interview with Sean Martin, Hatebreed’s guitarist. Teamer: With success over the recent years and a high-profile record deal, how do you respond to the older fans not willing to accommodate such change? Sean: It’s all good. We’re still here making heavy music. It’s not as if we’ve put out a rap record, not that I’ve got anything against hip-hop, but we’re not trying to change anything. Just because we’re on a bigger label and just because things are going well doesn’t mean we’re a lesser band, you know. We’re heavier now than we’ve ever been and we’re going to keep getting heavier. Teamer: Over the past few years, hardcore has risen greatly in popularity worldwide. Do you feel this has had a positive or negative effect on the state of the scene? Sean: I think it’s positive. I mean, how can it be negative? A lot of kids get bummed out when newer kids come into the scene or anything like that. God forbid a kid isn’t born with an Agnostic Front or Hatebreed shirt on. I know I wasn’t! I think it’s good because it opens up the minds of a lot of kids who may never have known the scene existed and it may give them a reason to do something positive like starting a band or a record label. Teamer: What bands would you say have been Hatebreed’s major influence? Sean: I’d have to say Hatebreed’s major influence musically would be Entombed, Sheer Terror, Carcass, Slayer, Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front. We love all music but those are the bands that make me want to write a riff and play the guitar. Teamer: It’s quite hard to compare you to those bands though. Yeah, well, we don’t try and be them but their aggression, their music and their lyrics give us the feeling to create – it’s inspiration! It doesn’t mean we’re going to take it note-for-note, which we may have here and there in the past (laughter). For the most part, those bands mashed together and squashed down to 2 minutes ends up as a Hatebreed song (more laughter). more to come…

Roadrunner Welcomes Faktion

Posted on February 12, 2008

Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Roadrunner is proud to welcome FAKTION to the family. Faktion’s music is described as “emotional, melodic, but aggressive rock with a metal edge.” The band’s influences “include, but are not limited to, Flaw’s aggression and Sevendust’s live performance, combined with Staind or Fuel’s engaging diapason.” The quintet will start recording their debut album around November in Orlando, Florida with producers Brett Hestla and Justin Thomas. In a note on their official site, Faktion announce: “OK, so it’s finally official, we’ve signed a record deal with a major label! We couldn’t be happier to be on Roadrunner with such talented acts as Nickelback, Slipknot, Thornley, Killswitch Engage, Theory of a Deadman, Fear Factory, Ill Nino and my personal favorite 36 Crazyfists. We’ve come a long way, but this is still only the beginning. This has been a long term goal of ours for such a long time, yet it is merely step one in the music business. We are going back to Orlando in November to record our debut album with Brett Hestla and Justin Thomas. Soon after that process is complete, we will be ready to hit the road early 2005. Many of you have been with us since day one, and you’ve stuck with us. You’ve watched us change and grow into the musicians we are today. You have given us some of the best times of our lives and we look forward to many, many more. Because of you, we have achieved something most bands only dream of. You are all a part of Faktion and always will be. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.” Stay tuned for a new artist section for more information.

My Heart In San Francisco

Posted on February 12, 2008

What’s going on with Thornley on the road? The latest news from the band, as follows: “Sitting in San Francisco for the second day in a row. Sorry to those of you who made the trip down here for the show last night. It was late in the day when we found out that the show here was going to be cancelled. “We spent the day hanging around Haight – Ashbury. Pretty cool area. Sekou bought the dvd of Black Samauri – we have been looking for this for a while. Sekou also bought the coolest new computer bag, he has fulfilled his new look as the Urban Warrior. Worm is, of course, jealous. Shaner found a new springy toy – you figure it out. Sekou does not want to be represented as a geek and he wants it made clear that it is a knapsack, not a computer bag. It actually has a compartment to hold his skateboard as well. “We hung out last night at the Phoenix hotel. It was a pretty cool experience. Hotel by day, nightclub by the pool at night. Shaun wants a mention on the site – there. “We did have fun in Reno. Well, not really – the show was a blast but the day off was a little unfulfilling. We went to see a movie and ended off with over four hours to kill in this wonderful little gambling spot. If you don’t gamble there is nothing else to do. So we waited. Worm, all high and shit, entertained himself by chatting with local authorities. Shaner drank Margaritas not knowing that they contained tequila. He got sick.” News: – Sekou and Ian got new nike air force Two’s. – Our new commander in chief, Shaun, is getting used to the rigors of the Thornley camp. – Sekou slashed Worms leg open with a projectile cymbal. Good and deep. – We got woken up on the highway by a bus fire. Twice. As it turns out it was a blown rad, hence we are still in SF instead of travelling. Out of the four busses this year we have been pretty lucky with things thus far so we can’t really complain. – Chris from Dayton Boots is meeting us in Vegas for a few days of partying. This should be fun. – Tumor from LoPro is coming out to the LA show.
