PORCUPINE TREE REVEAL DETAILS OF NEW ALBUM 'THE INCIDENT'

16/06/2009

Grammy-nominated UK recording artist PORCUPINE TREE have confirmed the title of their tenth studio album: The Incident. The captivating new record is set to be released via Roadrunner Records on September 21, as a double CD.

Prepare to embark on a thrilling audio journey. In turns haunting, unnerving, desolate, hypnotic, and euphoric, its centre-piece is the title track – a stunning 55-minute musical statement, described by vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Steven Wilson as “a slightly surreal song cycle about beginnings and endings and the sense that ‘after this, things will never be the same again’.”

The seeds of the idea that led to The Incident came to Wilson as he became caught up in a motorway traffic jam whilst driving past a road accident.

“There was a sign saying ‘POLICE – INCIDENT’ and everyone was slowing down to rubber neck to see what had happened,” he recalls. “Afterwards, it struck me that ‘incident’ is a very detached word for something so destructive and traumatic for the people involved. And then I had the sensation that the spirit of someone that had died in the car accident entered into my car and was sitting next to me.

“The irony of such a cold expression for such seismic events appealed to me, and I began to pick out other ‘incidents’ reported in the media and news,” continues Wilson. “I wrote about the evacuation of teenage girls from a religious cult in Texas, a family terrorizing its neighbours, a body found floating in a river by some people on a fishing trip, and more. Each song is written in the first person and tries to humanize the detached media reportage.”

Additionally, Wilson delved back into incidents in his own life that had profoundly affected him, including a lost childhood friendship, a seance, his first love, and the day that he decided to give up secure employment to follow his dream of making music.

The self-produced album is completed by four standalone compositions that developed out of band writing sessions last December – Flicker, Bonnie The Cat, Black Dahlia, and Remember Me Lover – housed on a separate CD to stress their independence from the title track.

Porcupine Tree – completed by Gavin Harrison (drums), Colin Edwin (bass), and Richard Barbieri (keyboards) – took a video camera into the recording studio, capturing a few moments to share with fans. Explore the behind-the-scenes footage in the player below.

Coming to the recording sessions following his first ever solo album, November 2008’s Insurgentes, Wilson admits that the experience of having worked alone affected the direction of The Incident. “Possibly because of having done that, this record is darker, expansive, and more experimental,” he theorizes. “But when I write for Porcupine Tree, I know the sound I’m after.”

Porcupine Tree’s latest masterpiece The Incident will be released September 21.

Well that little taster tells me precisely nothing about the music on the new album ... and do you know what that pleases me no end! These little tasters that I can't stop myself from watching/listening to just leave me frustated and wanting more - other recent case in points - Loads of Dream Theater tasters and the new Megadeth mix teaster. They aren't going to persuade me to buy the album because I'm going to do that anyway, and if I was new to the band this might even turn me off! (If you are new to PT then check out their varied back catalogue from anywhere - they are all pretty unique Prog fans start with the early stuff - prog metal fans start with the later ones! Enough rant from me 2 skulls for being PT.

This is all fantastic, this stuff about the new album, but first may be someone can answer this.. On october 15th and 16th Porcupine Tree recorded a live concert in 013 in Tilburg, the Netherlands. This DVD was to be released in march of 2009. So... I see and hear nothing about this release! Rumours even have it that the complete DVD is cancelled. Can someone tell me more about it?

Absolutey stupendous. I've been waiting for this moment since Fear of a Blank planet. I'm very excited about this! This may be a little teaser but it's enough to interest me because I collect their albums! This is going to be awesome.

I don't think this would turn me off if I were a new fan - the video is ambiguous if anything, but shouldn't it be?
Anyway, the idea of this album all appears very awesome and profound. I'm excited for whatever musicality lies behind the concept!

aw man! this just sets me on edge. i appreciate the chance to hear some of the new tunes before it gets released, but after hearing it im just edgy now cause there wasnt enough to be able to sink into the groove with it. past PT releases have been all about immersion into the album (well for me anyway) and floating along with it in whatever direction they feel like taking me. having those little snippets was like riding a bus that stops every 2 seconds to let someone off. if the albums finished, put us out of our misery and release it, please. anyway moan over, stoked the new album is coming out this year, sounds good, will now go hide in a cupboard until september
