GOJIRA’s sticksman, Mario Duplantier, spoke to Australian website AltMusicHub recently in advance of the band heading over for Soundwave Festival and you can see some extracts from that interview below:
How is recording the new album going?
Joe Duplantier my brother is finishing vocals in New York. I am not in New York; I am in France as I have finished the drums for the album. Right now my brother is finishing vocals and then next step is to mix everything in January and February.
Was there any material for the album pre written before going to New York or has it all been done there?
Everything has been written and recorded in New York. Usually we do everything ourselves, in our studio. This time we wanted to do everything in New York because it is easier for us. There is less stress and less energy so we decided to work with Josh from the beginning to the end.
Who is producing the album?
The album is being co-produced with my brother Joe and Josh Wilbur. He was the guy who produced the last Lamb of God album (Wrath).
Nature and the earth have been major components of Gojira’s sound will these continue with the new album?
We all share ideas together. Though Joe writes everything and I am just the drummer (laughs). This album is going to be a little bit different. This album is about freedom and each person has a wild child inside of them. This album is about the state of our music and lifestyle; the quests which lead to freedom; of the heart and mind. We don’t want to fade away. This album is about the present.
Gojira is playing an epic sidewave with Mastodon and Kevlertak which has sold out one show and only a few tickets left for the other. What was your reaction?
We love Mastodon; we love their energy, their style and their music. We would love to play a good venue with them. It is a compromise with the festival. Festivals can be too big with so many people so it is exciting.
