MEGADETH PEN NEW TRACK FOR GUITAR HERO- THEY WANTED MORE SOLO’S, THEY GOT MORE SOLO’S

Posted on July 2, 2010

It’s been mentioned in numerous interviews with the band over the summer festival run, but it’s RollingStone.com who shine the most light on what’s to come in the next Guitar Hero game: a brand new track from MEGADETH!!!

Writes the online publication, “Dave Mustaine has been hinting at big news for months on his website, slaving over a ‘top secret project’ and now, the Megadeth leader has revealed the results exclusively to Rolling Stone: A blistering new track called “Sudden Death” that will serve as the finger-busting finale to the forthcoming Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock game.”

In an exclusive interview, Mustaine tells Rolling Stone, “I thought it was a great idea for us. We’ve had experience with games in the past, and our songs have been in sports games and Grand Theft Auto, but we never really got into the Guitar Hero thing. When they talked to us about doing this, I never imagined it would be something this honorable.” Setting the stage for the how the track will be presented, rs.com continues, “Unlike previous Guitar Hero titles, the upcoming Warriors of Rock features a story-based adventure mode, voiced by Kiss’ Gene Simmons. To advance through the game, players will have to tackle tricky tracks like Black Sabbath’s ‘Children of the Grave,’ Muse’s ‘Uprising,’ Slayer’s ‘Chemical Warfare’ and the Cure’s ‘Fascination Street.’ But to beat the game’s last stage boss, players will have to master Megadeth’s ‘Sudden Death.’

Activision, the publishers of Guitar Hero, commissioned the track from Mustaine and Megadeth, and were very hands-on in the song’s development since “Sudden Death” has to pose the ultimate challenge to hardcore gamers.”

Mustaine explains, “Activision heard the track, and said, ‘We want more solos on it.’ And I said, OK, I can do that.” While Rolling Stone contests, “‘Sudden Death’ turned into a scathing, speedy thrash tune that’s sure to lead to some fingertip callusing. Mustaine claims the song has a ‘funky kind of polyrhythm to it’ which will make it even more difficult for the Guitar Hero elite.”

But with all their history, one thing’s for sure: Lynyrd Skynyrd put on one heck of a live show, and that’s exactly what they’re celebrating with their latest CD/DVD Live From Freedom Hall.

MEGADETH’S DAVE MUSTAINE CHATS ABOUT THE BIG FOUR EXPERIENCE

Posted on June 30, 2010

So now that the Big Four dates have come and gone, I feel it is time to check-in, say, ‘Hello’ and tell you what has been going on in my world,” writes MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine from megadeth.com.

First off, when we left San Marcos and Mustaine Music Studios aka ‘Vic’s Garage,’ we had no idea what to expect, other than the fact that we wanted to make a point; we wanted to make the other bands feel comfortable, we wanted the fans to all leave this momentous occasion feeling completely satiated, we wanted the guys in Metallica to know that we could be depended on to pull our share…

“I don’t know if we delivered for everyone, but for the tens of thousands of people each night, and ultimately hundreds of thousands of fans over the entire run of the Big Four festivals (affectionately dubbed “Sonisphere”), it seemed to me that the fans were finally able to put aside the silly stuff that the press has kept on life support for so many, many years. We did several round-table interviews with a member from each camp of the Big Four, and one thing that was a constant and that we all agreed on was that the press was the responsible parties for keeping the feuds alive.

You heard it straight from our mouths; we are all at peace with one another, and we all are friends. End of story – or in other words, several shit magazines will now have to learn how to write real interviews, reviews, and features, instead of causing so much turmoil with us four, all in the spirit of selling their publications.”

The full post from Dave can be found over at the Megadeth fanclub website.

MACHINE HEAD FRONTMAN ROBB FLYNN HONORS DEBBIE ABONO

Posted on June 30, 2010

MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn has recorded an acoustic cover of Black Sabbath’s “Die Young” from the classic Heaven and Hell album in tribute to late metal manager Debbie Abono, who sadly passed away on the same day as legendary heavy metal singer and HEAVEN AND HELL front man Ronnie James Dio.

In a statement made at the beginning of the video, below, which was recorded the day after Debbie’s passing, Robb says, “I don’t know why I recorded this song, it doesn’t really have relevance to Debbie or Dio, but I was sad and depressed and it was the only thing that made sense in the world.”

There are no plans to officially release Flynn’s version of “Die Young,” but an MP3 version of the track is available for free download at his band’s official site HERE, and the video can be viewed below.

Debbie Abono, a well-respected and much-loved manager and promotional machine behind some of the San Francisco Bay Area’s strongest metal bands (Possessed, Forbidden, Exodus, Vio-Lence, Skinlab), passed away on May 16 after a battle with cancer. She was 80 years old.

In a May 17 statement regarding Abono’s passing, Flynn wrote:

I am devastated at the passing of Debbie Abono and words aren’t coming very clear for me right now. Debbie was like a second mom to me, and having never lost a family member yet, this is very difficult. Debbie managed Vio-Lence [Flynn’s pre-Machine Head band], and toured with us in a van as manager, tour manager, mom, friend, and facilitator. Phil [Demmel; current Machine Head, former Vio-Lence guitarist] and I were her roommates at crummy Motel 6’s across America.

Thinking back on it now, touring with a bunch of snot-nosed thrash metal-ers for two months at a time in a van, playing crummy clubs, isn’t the usual course most 55-year-old ladies take in their lives, but she was no ordinary 55-year-old lady. She was fiery, feisty, charming, funny, and could look a person over in about two seconds and find something to joke about / roast them about should they wanted to test her. She was one of the biggest forces behind the thrash and early-death-metal movements than I think most people will ever realize.” The full statement can be read HERE.
