It may be their debut Roadrunner release, but Caliban are almost veterans of the European metalcore scene, having already released 3 albums and 2 EPs on the Lifeforce label.  Within just a few years, the German-based five-piece have become key players in a growing genre, having led the way both at home and internationally. Named after the wild, deformed slave in Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, the Caliban character is not only one of the more important figures in the literary drama, but with his strange mix of diabolical ruse, animalistic coarseness and mighty impetuosity, he could be dubbed the unofficial patron saint of metalcore.

Having formed in 1997 (initially as ‘Never Again’), the band were seen by the critics as a blend of Slayer, Poison the Well and Hatebreed.  Countless tours through Europe, including shows with Earth Crisis and Cro-Mags strengthened their reputation and racked up a growing army of Caliban “apostles”.  Their first full-length debut album "A Small Boy And A Grey Heaven" (1999) was critically acclaimed and people began to sit up and take notice.

By late 2002, the band’s 3rd long player, "Shadow Hearts” was in stores.  The release became a metal milestone, introducing a new style of post-modern, destructive metalcore with an unparalleled sense of heaviness and musicianship.  The release saw a mature band moving further in the direction of harmony and melody without ever denying their metal & hardcore roots. Their tour with Killswitch Engage and Shadows Fall strengthened their musical direction and their friendship with people like Mike D (KsE’s bassist, who also designs T-shirts for Caliban) finally helped to establish them on the US scene.

In Jan 2004, Caliban entered The Room Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden to record their latest, “The Opposite From Within.” Produced by In Flames frontman Anders Friden, then mixed and mastered in the UK by Andy Sneap (Machine Head, KsE, Arch Enemy), fans can look forward to vast walls of guitar, driving drums, dynamic tempo changes, both heavy yet melodic vocals and hardcore bass lines.

Caliban have arrived on these shores.  Welcome them with open arms.  And devil horns…
