Within Temptation have come a long way in the last ten years. From their humble beginnings, the chart-topping Dutch band have now sold over 1.2 million CDs and DVDs world-wide, making them not only Holland’s biggest selling musical export but also one of the fastest growing new rock acts internationally – picking up a plethora of Gold and Platinum certifications along the way and a notable collection of various music awards.
Following performances in 2005 and 2006 at practically every major European festival - as well as with Iron Maiden and Rammstein - much of last year was spent writing their forthcoming new album The Heart Of Everything. Set for release on March 12, Daniel Gibson is once again in the producer’s chair, with Stefan Glaumann (Rammstein) mixing. First single, the anthemic What Have You Done, features guest vocals from Keith Caputo (Life Of Agony). The video for the track is currently being spun on The Box, B4, Chartshow TV, Kerrang! TV, and Scuzz. On multiple radio playlists as well, the single will be released digitally on March 5.
In describing The Heart Of Everything, guitarist Robert Westerholt enthuses, “Although you can still clearly hear that this is a Within Temptation record, many things have changed and evolved. Sharon shows how versatile she is as a singer more than on any record we've done. On some songs, she sings with a lot of power; on others she is more melodic… a siren enchanting her subjects. Sometimes she is emotional and sensitive. The guitars also play a larger part – there are a lot of riffs and even the occasional solo! We have added an extra dimension to our new songs too by enhancing them with historic samples for the first time.” This is especially notable on the epic song Our Solemn Hour and the soaring Frozen.
Development is also apparent on a more technical level. Robert explains, “Production is more focused, and the arrangements match better and are more concise. We still have big orchestral and choral parts but not constantly. This allows room for the instruments to come through stronger and also means that when you do hear the orchestra, it has more impact. Compared to our last album The Silent Force, our new record is more dynamic and energetic. It has a more natural sound.“
Within Temptation have also been closely involved with hotly-anticipated fantasy game The Chronicles Of Spellborn. The band were invited to create the accompanying music and the resulting lead song written - The Howling – is the album’s opening track. A special video trailer, which includes footage of the game and angelic vocalist Sharon Den Adel, debuted in December on MTV.com and IGN.com (one of the world’s largest games websites with 22 million unique visitors p/month).
