The Awakening’ is “a mix of all the stuff we do best”, according to guitarist and main songwriter Marc Görtz. The album combines various elements from past Caliban releases, such as the heaviness of “Shadow Hearts“ (2003), the sheer viciousness of “The Opposite From Within“ (2004) and the melody of “The Undying Darkness“ (2006). However; ‘The Awakening’ is heavier and much more complex.
The title, ‘The Awakening’ can be taken in a literal sense, having been shot through with a positive outlook. The opening track and first single ‘I Will Never Let You Down’ kicks off appropriately with the lyrics “Wake Up! Stand up for everything you want. Let’s go, let’s live” and leads into one of Caliban’s trademark elevated choruses. Here frontman Andy’s aggressive delivery blends with guitarist Denis’s clean vocals. “My Time Has Come“ and “I Believe“ are two typical Caliban anthems - powerful, emotionally charged music that will make every Caliban fan’s heart beat faster. The unexpected breaks, melodious guitars and Andy’s occasional whispers are all trademark Caliban moves.
Fans of Caliban’s earlier material will love ‘The Awakening’ since it includes tracks which follow in the footsteps of older Caliban songs, such as “Life Is Too Short“, which is about leaving the dark past behind and starting anew - “Life is too short to think all through. Life is too short to waste it all“. This song lays down the gauntlet that world-class metalcore does not necessarily have to come from the States.
Although “The Awakening“ draws on elements of previous releases, this new material is more complex and heavier than anything that has gone before. It also sounds more mature due to the fact that Marc and producer Benny Richter went into great detail during pre-production, before even entering the studio. This turned out so well that no additional sound engineer was needed. The mixing process was done by metal master Adam D of Killswitch Engage and the mastering was done at Prinzipal Studios in Senden.
Caliban celebrate their 10th anniversary this year and it’s clear they are bursting with self-confidence. The new record emphasises the fact and showcases a skilful mix of anthems and aggressive metalcore songs which are sure to result in circle pits and serious mosh action in clubs across the planet.
“The album closes with the words: Don´t tell me who I am, I live my life how I want to!” Plainly, Caliban are back and more confident than ever.
