Tommy's Track-By-Track I

Posted on February 12, 2008

Over the next few days, we'll be bringing you daily reports from Spineshank's Tommy Decker.

Tommy talks about every track on the new album 'Self-Destructive Pattern' (out on Monday) - what he likes, what he doesn't like, how it was written, how it was recorded, and the end result.

Today, tracks 1 & 2.

1. Violent Mood Swings
This song is one of my favorite songs on the record and the only song that we even considered opening with. The best way to open up a record is with some anger and energy and this song definitely has that! We recorded the vocals on this 9 times!! We kept trying different approaches and none of them felt right. We had actually mixed the song and then decided that we wanted to do it once more. Jonny wasn't too happy about this, but his anger worked. He did one pass, screaming at the top of his lungs and it was done. We still fuck with him and tell him that we're gonna recall the song and sing it again. Good times.

2. Slavery
This song is easily one the heaviest songs we have ever done. Definitely a live song, it's got a good groove and it's really fast. This was the very last song we wrote for the record and it was a bitch to write! Mike and I fought a lot while putting it together. We knew what we wanted but just couldn't get the parts to work together. The lyrics didn't even get done until the day Jonny sang it. It was a challenge but it was well worth it.

more to come...
