Welcome to our new weekly feature - Roadrunner Records A-Z Of Brutality. Each week we will cover a classic RR band & shed some light on some vicious bangers from the past! As this audio archaeology will be undertaken in alphabetical order let's start with Annihilator!
Founded in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada by multi-instrumentalist Jeff Waters in 1984, progressive thrash metallers Annihilator have amassed an impressive 13 album discography. Annihilator remain the biggest selling heavy metal band in Canadian history & their first 2 albums released on Roadrunner Records are consider to be bonafide metal classics. Annihilator came to the attention of Roadrunner Records as their notoriety on the underground tape trading circuit grew rapidly with the demos 'Welcome To Your Death' & 'Phantasmagoria' becoming hot property.
Their debut album 'Alice In Hell' (Click to listen) which you can listen to right here on Spotify, made a huge impact on the metal landscape in 1989. Considered by many to provide a thinking man's thrash metal, Annihilator offered a great deal more than many of their peers. The stunning debut was followed rapidly by their second album 'Never, Neverland' (Click to listen) which saw the band chart at number 48 in the official UK charts.
In 1999 the bands original line-up (minus bass player Wayne Darley) reformed & reunited with Roadrunner Records for the release of 'Criteria For A Black Widow' (Click to listen). In 2007 Annihilator released their 12th studio album 'Metal' which featured a number of Roadrunner alumni such as Trivium's Corey Beaulieu, Lamb Of God's Willie Adler & Dream Theater's Mike Mangini.
