ROADRUNNER RECORDS A-Z OF BRUTALITY // BRUJERIA

Posted on May 24, 2013

Machete death metal wielders Brujeria formed in LA, California in 1989. Established by Fear Factory's Dino Cazares, Brujera has featured a number of prominent members over the years such as Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedy's), Billy Gould (Faith No More) & Shane Embury (Napalm Death) to name but a few.

The bands concept was inspired in part by the satanic rituals that were uncovered at Rancho Santa Elena in 1989. Founded by Cazares to provide a voice for the Hispanic community within extreme metal, Brujeria sing exclusively in Spanish & when translated the name means witchcraft. Brujeria exist within an intimidating & vicious shroud of mystery & controversy since day one. Assuming the fictional characters of Latino drug lords & performing under pseudonym's whilst hiding their faces with scarves & balaclavas, Brujeria became a powerful force in the death metal & grindcore world. Their lyrics have always created controversy as they deal primarily in topics of immigration, satanism, sex, politics & drugs.

Brujeria's 1993 debut album 'Matando Gueros' was released on Roadrunner Records. Aside from the brutal sound, the severed head artwork also caused controversy & offence which saw the release banned in many places initially. 1995 saw the release of their second Roadrunner record; 'Raza Odiada' which is considered by fans & critics to be the bands strongest record. The album also saw the release of the video 'La Ley De Plomo' which received late night attention on MTV. 5 years later & one cover of The Macarena behind them, Brujeria released their most commercially successful record to date in the form of 2000's 'Brujerizmo'. The album saw the inclusion Nicholas Barker (Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir) as second drummer & Gaby Dominguez as the female demon. Brujerizmo garned the band with a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. Brujeria did not attend the ceremony.
